issyk-kul
A huge blue lake between snowy ranges, with beaches, red canyons and yurt stays.
- Best time
- June–September is best for a road trip round the lake. July–August has the warmest swimming and September is quieter; many seasonal stays close for the cold winter.
- How long
- 4–6 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Bishkek, usually via Almaty or Tashkent, about 11–14 hours all in. Cholpon-Ata on the north shore is about 4 hours from Bishkek by road, and Karakol at the eastern end about 6–7 hours.

Issyk-Kul is so big it feels like an inland sea, with snowy ranges behind both shores. The north has the busier beach towns; the south has quieter villages, red canyons and yurt camps.

Good to know
- Pick one shore for a short trip; driving all the way round takes most of a day before any stops.
- Bring cash for the south-shore villages, where cards are rarely accepted.
- Guesthouse cooking is Kyrgyz and halal as a rule. Kumys, the fermented mare's milk sold by the road in summer, contains a little alcohol.
