ipoh in 2 days, 1 night

A day eating your way round the old town, then dim sum and two cave temples the next morning before the drive home. Easy to fit into a weekend.

  1. Day 1

    Old town on foot

    Morning
Drive up from KL, about 2.5 hours on the North–South Expressway, or take the ETS from KL Sentral. Start with white coffee at an old kopitiam on Jalan Bandar Timah, then walk the old town murals before it gets hot.
    Lunch
Kai si hor fun, shredded chicken and flat rice noodles in a clear prawn broth, at a kopitiam in the old town.
    Afternoon
Wander Concubine Lane for snacks and small shops, a few minutes' walk away. Then check in and rest through the heat and the afternoon showers.
    Evening
Bean sprout chicken at Lou Wong or Onn Kee, which face each other on the same street in New Town, a short drive over the river. Order the chicken, the bean sprouts and rice or hor fun for the table.
  2. Day 2

    Dim sum and cave temples

    Morning
Dim sum early on Jalan Leong Sin Nam, before the queues. Then drive about 15 minutes south to Kek Lok Tong, where the cave opens onto a lake and gardens, and Sam Poh Tong a few minutes away.
    Lunch
Back in the old town, about 15 minutes away, have a last kopitiam lunch and buy a salted chicken from Aun Kheng Lim to take home.
    Afternoon
Drive home, about 2.5 hours. Southbound traffic builds on Sunday afternoons, so leave early if you can.

Good to know

  • Go early. The dim sum halls and the famous breakfast places get long queues by mid-morning, especially at weekends.
  • Many stalls close one day a week, so check before you drive over. Bring cash for the older kopitiams.
  • Travelling with kids? Swap the cave temples for Lost World of Tambun, about 20 minutes from town.
