interlaken
Two lakes, mountain trains and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau on the skyline.
- Best time
- May–September is best for lakes and mountain trips, though high paths keep their snow into June. November is quiet, with some lifts closed; December–March is ski season in Grindelwald and Wengen.
- How long
- 3–4 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Zurich, usually via Singapore, Dubai or Istanbul, about 15–17 hours all in, then the train from Zurich airport takes about 2.5 hours. Switzerland is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Interlaken sits on a strip of land between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau rising behind. The town is a base; what you came for are the valleys, lakes and mountain trains all around it.

- LauterbrunnenA deep valley of waterfalls, with Staubbach Falls dropping off the cliff beside the village.Map ↗
- GrindelwaldA village under the Eiger, with a gondola up to First and its cliff walk.Map ↗
- Harder KulmA funicular straight up from town to a lookout over both lakes, running from spring to autumn.Map ↗
- Lake BrienzTurquoise water and boat trips to the woodcarving village of Brienz.Map ↗
Good to know
- Interlaken gets lots of visitors from the Gulf, so there are plenty of halal Indian and Middle Eastern restaurants in town; up in the mountains, choice is thin.
- Mountain webcams show whether the peaks are clear, so save the Jungfraujoch for a blue-sky day.
