Stilt villages, floating gardens and weaving workshops on a highland lake.

Best time
November to February is dry and sunny, with cold mornings on the boat. March to May is warmer and hazy, and June to September brings the rains. The Phaung Daw Oo festival, when gilded barges tour the lake, falls in September or October.

A long, shallow lake in the Shan hills, ringed by stilt villages and floating tomato gardens, where Intha fishermen row with one leg wrapped round the oar. The March 2025 earthquake hit the lakeside villages hard and many hotels were still closed in mid-2026, but the boats run and the big pagoda festival went ahead in 2025.

Good to know

  • Agree the stops with your boatman before you set off, or the day turns into a string of souvenir workshops.
  • The UK advises against all but essential travel to southern Shan State, which includes Inle; fighting has been in the hills further south, around Pekon, rather than on the lake.
  • Halal food is limited. Lake fish, egg and vegetable dishes are the easy fallback.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
