Vietnam's capital under the Nguyen dynasty from 1802 to 1945, on the Perfume River in the middle of the country. The walled citadel, the Imperial City inside it, and the royal tombs and pagodas along the river make up a UNESCO World Heritage complex. It's slower and quieter than Da Nang, and proud of its food.

Good to know
- Cover shoulders and knees at the pagodas and the temples inside the Imperial City.
- The tombs are spread out, so hire a car or join a tour to see a few in one day.
- Many local dishes here use pork. Ask before ordering if you avoid it.
