huangshan

Granite peaks poking through a sea of clouds, crooked pines and sunrise views.

Best time
April to May and September to November usually bring the clearest views and the most comfortable walking. Summer is wetter and busier, and winter snow is lovely but the paths get icy.
How long
2 days, 1 night
Getting there
Fly from KL to Hangzhou, about 5 hours, then take the high-speed train to Huangshan North, about 1.5–2 hours. From there, buses run about an hour to Tangkou at the foot of the mountain.

The Yellow Mountains of southern Anhui are the granite peaks, twisted pines and seas of cloud you see in Chinese ink paintings. Stone steps and cable cars take you up, and many people spend a night on the summit for sunset and sunrise.

Good to know

  • Pack light and wear good shoes. Even with the cable cars, you'll climb a lot of stone steps.
  • It's much colder on top than at the base. Bring layers and a rain jacket in any season, and don't count on seeing the sea of clouds.
  • Avoid Chinese public holidays like Golden Week, when cable car queues can take hours.
