The city destroyed by the first atomic bomb in 1945, rebuilt as a green, easy-going place on a river delta. The Peace Memorial Park and museum are sobering and worth the time, and the food, from okonomiyaki to oysters, is a highlight.

Good to know

  • The memorial sites are places of mourning. Keep your voice low and be thoughtful with photos.
  • Classic okonomiyaki comes with pork. Ask for seafood instead, or look for halal-certified shops if you need them.
