himeji
Japan's best original castle, bright white and ringed by cherry blossoms in spring.
- Best time
- Late March to early April, when around a thousand cherry trees bloom around the castle; expect big crowds. Autumn is mild, and Koko-en's maples turn red.
- How long
- Half a day
- Getting there
- Fly to Kansai International (about 6.5 hours from KL). Himeji is about 30 minutes from Shin-Osaka by shinkansen, or about an hour by JR special rapid from Osaka. The castle is a 15–20 minute walk straight up the main road from the station.

Himeji Castle, nicknamed White Heron Castle, is the finest of Japan's few original castles and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's an easy day trip from Osaka or Kobe, and Koko-en garden next door is worth an hour too.

Good to know
- Arrive at opening time. In spring and on holidays, the queue to enter the keep gets long.
- You take your shoes off inside the keep and carry them in a bag, so wear easy shoes and socks.
Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
