China's far northeastern city grew up around a Russian-built railway at the end of the 1800s, and it still shows in the onion domes and old European façades. In winter it's famous for its ice and snow festival, with whole castles built from blocks of ice cut from the frozen Songhua River.

Good to know

  • Dress for serious cold: thermals, a down jacket, insulated boots with good grip, a hat, gloves and a face cover. Pavements are icy.
  • Phone batteries drain fast in the cold. Keep your phone in an inner pocket and carry a power bank.
  • Most places expect Alipay or WeChat Pay. Link your card to one before you fly and keep some cash as a backup.
