hallstatt

Lakeside houses stacked below mountains, salt-mine tunnels and ferry views of the village.

Best time
May–June and September–October are best for walks and boat trips, with fewer people. July–August is very crowded; winter is quiet and pretty under snow, but boats run less often and days are short.
How long
1–2 days
Getting there
Fly with one stop to Vienna or Munich, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 15–17 hours all in. From Vienna it's about 3.5 hours by train, changing at Attnang-Puchheim; from Munich, take the train to Salzburg (about 2.5 hours), then about 2 hours by bus and train. Austria is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Hallstatt squeezes onto a ledge between a lake and a steep mountainside, its old houses stacked down to the water. People have mined salt in the mountain above for some 7,000 years, long before the tour buses came.

Things to do

  1. Lakefront and market squareThe square, the church spire and the lanes along the water make the famous view; the classic photo spot is at the north end of the village.Map ↗
  2. Salt mineA funicular climbs to the mine, where you slide down the miners' old wooden chutes deep inside the mountain. It reopened in August 2026 with a new funicular.Map ↗
  3. SkywalkA viewing platform at the top of the funicular, about 350 metres above the rooftops and the lake.Map ↗
  4. Lake ferryThe little ferry from Hallstatt station, on the far shore, gives the best view of the village from the water.Map ↗
  5. Bone HouseHundreds of painted skulls in a small chapel by the church, a custom from when the tiny graveyard ran out of space.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Hallstatt station is across the lake, and the ferry meets the trains.
  • Stay the night to see the village quiet, before the day-trippers arrive and after they leave.
  • Halal meat is hard to find here; the lake fish is the easy option, or bring food from Salzburg.
