gunung belumut

A full day's jungle climb to a 1,010-metre summit east of Kluang, with a waterfall early on.

Best time
February to October. Johor Forestry shuts its trails for the north-east monsoon, usually from November, and reopens them in stages from mid-January. Even in the open months, the trail turns slippery after rain.
How long
1 full day
Getting there
About 3 hours' drive from KL to Kluang on the North–South Expressway, then about 40 minutes east on the Kluang–Mersing road to Taman Eko Rimba Gunung Belumut near Ulu Dengar. Sleep in Kluang the night before.

At 1,010 metres, Gunung Belumut is one of Johor's taller peaks and a proper day out: about 6 km of roots, rock and steep forest each way from the eco-park at its foot. Hikers come from JB and Singapore for it, and the picnic spots by the stream suit everyone else.

Good to know

  • Book the Johor Forestry permit online before you go, and ask about a guide when you do. Weekend and school-holiday slots fill two or three weeks ahead.
  • Start at first light and agree a turnaround time; you want to be off the mountain before dark.
  • Carry at least 3 litres of water each, a head torch and rain gear.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
