gunung baling

A booked, guided morning climb up the limestone hill that towers over Baling town.

Best time
January to March is usually driest. The climb is called off as soon as it rains, so the wet months, roughly September to November, risk a wasted trip. Start as early as you're allowed, for the cloud and the cool.
How long
Half a day
Getting there
About 5 hours' drive from KL: the North–South Expressway to Kuala Kangsar, then Route 76 north through Gerik and Pengkalan Hulu to Baling. The hill is on the edge of town. From Penang, allow about 1.5 hours.

Gunung Baling is the 546 m limestone hill right behind Baling town, and the climb is run by the district council. It's about an hour and a half up: steep forest on earth, then forest on rock, then a last stretch through scrub and bamboo to a summit with views all the way round, and cloud lying in the valleys on a good morning.

Good to know

  • Every group must climb with a certified guide, so arrange one before you drive out. Climbs start only in the morning, the gate shuts by mid-morning, and there are none on Fridays.
  • For a sunrise climb before the normal start, write to Majlis Daerah Baling at least three weeks ahead; those need a group of 30 or more.
  • If it rains, the climb is cancelled on the spot, so keep Ulu Legong as plan B.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
