Guizhou's capital sits high on a plateau, so summers are cooler than in most of southern China. It's the start of most trips around the province, with sour, spicy food, green hills in the city and Huangguoshu, one of China's biggest waterfalls, a couple of hours away.

Good to know
- Guizhou cooking often uses pork. Lanzhou-style halal noodle shops (look for the qingzhen, 清真, signs) are the easy halal option.
