guanajuato
Colourful hillside houses, underground roads and little plazas full of evening music.
- Best time
- February–April and October–November are sunny and mild, with the Cervantino arts festival filling the city in October. June–September bring afternoon rain, and winter nights are chilly.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly to León/Bajío with two stops, via Tokyo or Seoul and Mexico City, about 25–30 hours all in. Guanajuato is about 40 minutes from the airport by road. It's 14 hours behind KL all year. Malaysians don't need a visa for Mexico, but connecting through a US airport would need a US visa.

Guanajuato is an old silver-mining city squeezed into a narrow ravine, its brightly painted houses climbing the hills on either side. Cars run through tunnels underneath, leaving the plazas and alleys above for walking.

Good to know
- The centre is steep and many lanes are stairways, so pack light; taxis can't reach every door.
- Halal is hard to find, so lean on vegetarian dishes and ask about lard.
