gua musang
Limestone cliffs over the old railway town, a Mecca-style mosque and the home of Musang King.
- Best time
- March to October. The north-east monsoon brings heavy rain from about November to January, and floods can cut the roads. Come in durian season, usually around the middle of the year, if you can.
- How long
- 1 day, or a night on the way to Kota Bharu
- Getting there
- About 5 hours' drive from KL via Bentong, Raub and Kuala Lipis, or via Simpang Pulai and the Cameron Highlands road. Kota Bharu is about 3 hours further north. Trains on KTM's East Coast Line also stop here.

Kelantan's biggest district, and the first proper town on the inland road from KL. The old town sits right under a wall of limestone with the cave it's named after up in the cliff, and the Musang King durian takes its name from here.

Things to do
- The old townShophouses and the disused old railway station sit right under the limestone cliff. Go in the morning, before the heat.Map ↗
- Bukit Gua MusangThe cave that gave the town its name is up in the cliff. The climb is a steep scramble, so go with a local who knows the way.Map ↗
- Masjid RazaleighA big new mosque built as a small-scale replica of the Masjidil Haram in Mecca, with a Kaabah replica in the courtyard.Map ↗
- Masjid BuluhA small mosque built almost entirely of bamboo, a quick stop in town.Map ↗
- Kampung PulaiAn old Hakka village with a Guanyin temple by the river, about 15 minutes south.Map ↗
Good to know
- Kelantan's weekend is Friday and Saturday, and many shops close for Friday prayers.
- Dress modestly at the mosques and avoid visiting at prayer times.
- The inland road crawls during the balik kampung rush before Hari Raya. Leave early.
