gros morne national park

Cliff-lined inland water, bare orange Tablelands and small Newfoundland fishing villages.

Best time
July–September are best for hikes and boat trips. June can still be cool and wet, with some high trails closed; from November to April it's snow and few services.
How long
3–4 days
Getting there
Fly to Deer Lake with two stops, usually via London and Halifax or via Asia and Toronto, about 26–32 hours all in. Rocky Harbour is about an hour by car. Newfoundland is 10.5 hours behind KL, 11.5 from November to early March. Malaysians need a Canadian visitor visa, or just an eTA if flying in with a valid US visa or a Canadian visa held in the last 10 years.

Gros Morne, on Newfoundland's west coast, is where you can walk on the Earth's mantle: the bare orange Tablelands were pushed up from deep below the ocean floor. Add the fjord of Western Brook Pond and small fishing villages, and it's worth the long trip.

Good to know

  • The Gros Morne Mountain summit trail closes each spring for wildlife until late June; the Tablelands stay open.
  • There's no halal in the park's villages, so stock up before you arrive.
