great smoky mountains national park
Blue mountain ridges, old cabins, forest walks and bright autumn leaves.
- Best time
- April–June bring wildflowers and fresh green forest, and mid-October is the peak of autumn colour and the busiest time. Summer is humid and crowded; winter snow can close Kuwohi Road and Newfound Gap.
- How long
- 3–4 days
- Getting there
- Fly to Atlanta with one stop via Seoul, about 21–24 hours all in, then drive about 3.5–4 hours to Gatlinburg, or connect to Knoxville, an hour from the park. The park is 12 hours behind KL, 13 from November to early March. Malaysians need a US B1/B2 visitor visa, usually with an interview at the embassy in KL; ESTA isn't open to Malaysian passports.

The Smokies are old, rounded mountains blanketed in forest, ridge after ridge fading into blue haze. Log cabins, mills and churches left by mountain farmers sit in the valleys, and many of the best walks are short.

- Newfound GapThe road over the mountains climbs to the Tennessee–North Carolina line, with long ridge views.Map ↗

Good to know
- Entry is free, but any stop longer than 15 minutes needs a parking tag; a national parks pass doesn't replace it.
- On Wednesdays from May to September, the Cades Cove loop is closed to cars, so hire a bike and ride it.
- Halal is easiest to find in Knoxville; in the park towns, Southern vegetables and beans are often cooked with pork, so bring supplies.
