gorkhi-terelj national park

Granite outcrops, grassy valleys and nights in a ger within reach of Ulaanbaatar.

Best time
June–September suits walking, horse riding and ger stays, with cool nights even in summer. November–March is intensely cold, and many camps close outside the warmer months.
How long
1–2 nights
Getting there
There are no direct flights from KL, so fly with one stop, usually via Seoul or Beijing, about 9–10 hours in the air. Terelj is about 1.5 hours' drive east of the city, and most ger camps arrange the transfer.

A national park of granite outcrops, larch forest and grassy valleys about 1.5 hours from Ulaanbaatar, and the easiest place to spend a night in a ger. The main valley is busy with camps, but a short walk or horse ride gets you into quiet country.

Good to know

  • Camps vary a lot, so ask whether toilets and showers are shared before you book.
  • Nights are cold even in summer; bring warm layers.
  • Camp meals are mutton and beef. If you need halal, ask your tour operator to bring halal meat from Ulaanbaatar.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
