gobi gurvansaikhan national park
Singing dunes, two-humped camels and cool gorges in Mongolia's southern desert.
- Best time
- May–June and September are best. July–August afternoons can be very hot, spring is windy, and November–March is bitterly cold, with many camps closed.
- How long
- 4–5 days from Ulaanbaatar
- Getting there
- There are no direct flights from KL, so fly with one stop, usually via Seoul or Beijing, about 9–10 hours in the air. Domestic flights reach Dalanzadgad, the gateway town, in about an hour; by road it's a long day's drive. Most people go on a tour with a driver.

Mongolia's biggest national park takes in the mountains and dunes of the southern Gobi, from towering singing sands to a cold, narrow gorge. Distances are huge, so a visit is a road trip of several days.

Good to know
- Book a driver for several days; the gorge and the big dunes are hours apart on rough tracks.
- Agree on water, toilets and halal meat with the tour company before leaving Ulaanbaatar, since camps are basic and shops are few.
