gemas

Sleepy junction town where the jungle railway begins its run to Kelantan.

Best time
Any time of year. If you plan to ride the jungle line, avoid the year-end monsoon, when floods can disrupt services on the east coast.
How long
Half a day, or an overnight stop before an early train
Getting there
About 2.5 hours' drive from KL. ETS trains from KL Sentral take about 2 hours. Segamat in Johor is about 30 km to the south.

Gemas is a small town near the Johor border, best known as the junction where the east coast railway, the old 'jungle line', splits off from the west coast main line. Train fans come to start the slow ride north through Pahang to Kelantan; most other people only see it from the train window.

Good to know

  • Trains on the east coast line are few and timetables change often, so check KTM's latest schedule and book ahead.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
