Galle Fort is a small town inside 17th-century Dutch sea walls, where homes, mosques, churches and cafés share the same grid of lanes. A day trip covers it, but a night inside the walls gets you the quiet mornings and sunset on the ramparts.

Good to know
- Galle Fort has an old Muslim community with its own mosques, and halal rice-and-curry places are easy to find in and around the fort.
- The ramparts are best early or at sunset; by midday the stone is hot.
- A hotel listed as 'Galle' can be several kilometres out on the beach road; inside the walls is what you want for walking.
