füssen
Painted old-town lanes, Alpine lakes and the base for Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau.
- Best time
- May–June and September–October are best, with lighter crowds. July–August is very busy at the castles; in winter, paths get icy and the Marienbrücke viewpoint is often closed.
- How long
- 2 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Munich, usually via Singapore, Dubai or Istanbul, about 15–17 hours all in. Trains from central Munich take about 2 hours, then a short bus ride to the castles. Germany is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Füssen is a small town of painted houses on the Lech river, right below the Alps. Most people come for King Ludwig II's castles at Schwangau, a few kilometres away, but the old town and lakes are worth a night.

Good to know
- Book Neuschwanstein tickets online well ahead; tours sell out in summer, and the walk up from the ticket centre takes 30–40 minutes.
- Halal meat is hard to find around the castles; bring food from Munich or stick to cheese noodles and fish.
