Purple lavender fields in summer, powder snow in winter. Pretty in every season.
- Best time
- Mid to late July for lavender at its peak, and June to September for other flowers. December to March for skiing.
- How long
- 1–2 days
- Getting there
- Fly from KL to New Chitose Airport near Sapporo (about 7.5 hours direct, or via Tokyo), then about 2 hours by car from Sapporo. Asahikawa Airport is closer, about an hour away. Trains from Sapporo need a change, with seasonal direct services in summer.

A farming town in the middle of Hokkaido, known across Japan for its lavender fields, a long-running TV drama and good skiing. Together with neighbouring Biei, it's the island's classic summer countryside trip.

Good to know
- Rent a car. The farms are spread out and buses are limited.
- In July, get to the popular farms early to beat the tour buses.
