Getting there
Fly from KL to Fukuoka (about 6 hours direct), or fly into Osaka and take the shinkansen (about 2.5 hours). The airport is unusually close to the city, about 15 minutes from Hakata.

Kyushu's biggest city, on Hakata Bay, and one of Japan's easiest to get around. It's famous for tonkotsu ramen and the yatai food stalls that pop up along the river at night, with shrines, parks and the sea all close by.

Good to know

  • Tonkotsu broth is made from pork. Look for halal or Muslim-friendly ramen shops if you need them.
  • Yatai are small and stools fill fast. Go early, carry cash, and don't linger if people are waiting.
