A skyline above the Main, reconstructed old-town lanes and museums along the river.
- Best time
- May–June and September–October are best for river walks. July–August can be hot; December has one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets, on the Römerberg, while January–February is grey.
- How long
- 1–2 days
- Getting there
- Lufthansa flies direct from KL from late October 2026, about 13 hours; otherwise it's one stop via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 15–17 hours all in. S-Bahn trains reach the main station in about 15 minutes. Germany is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Frankfurt is Germany's banking city, with skyscrapers on the Main river and a rebuilt old town of half-timbered houses below them. It's an easy first stop, with museums lining the riverbank and old cider taverns across the water in Sachsenhausen.

Things to do
- Römerberg and the new old townThe old town square and lanes rebuilt to their pre-war look, between the town hall and the cathedral.Map ↗

Good to know
- The Bahnhofsviertel, around the main station, is packed with Turkish, Arab and South Asian restaurants, many halal; it's a bit rough late at night.
- The airport has a regional station for the S-Bahn and a long-distance one for ICE trains, so check which your ticket uses.
Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
