The Roof of Indochina, by cable car from Sa Pa or a tough trek to the top.
- Best time
- October to November and March to May usually have the clearest views. Winter at the top is very cold, with occasional frost or snow, and summer is cloudy and wet. Clouds often roll in later in the day, so go early.
- How long
- Half a day by cable car, or 1–2 days to trek
- Getting there
- Fly KL to Hanoi (about 3 hours), then about 5–6 hours by bus to Sa Pa, or the overnight train to Lao Cai and an hour by road. From Sa Pa town, a funicular or a short drive gets you to the cable car station.

The highest mountain in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, at about 3,147 metres (often quoted as 3,143), in the Hoang Lien Son range just southwest of Sa Pa. A cable car takes you most of the way up, and a final stretch of steps, past pagodas and a giant Buddha statue, leads to the summit. Trekkers take one or two days to walk it.

Good to know
- Bring warm, windproof layers, even in summer. It's far colder at the top than in Sa Pa.
- The cable car climbs fast to over 3,000 metres, so take the final steps slowly.
- Trek with a licensed guide. The trails are steep and the weather changes quickly.
