dubrovnik
A walled stone city above the Adriatic, with island boats and swims just outside the gates.
- Best time
- May–June and September–October are warm, with boats to the islands running, though October brings more rain. July–August is hot and very crowded; winter is mild and wet, with fewer sailings and some places closed.
- How long
- 3 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Dubrovnik, usually via Istanbul, about 16–18 hours all in, or connect through Zagreb. Airport buses reach the old town in about 30 minutes. Croatia is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Dubrovnik's old town is a compact grid of polished stone streets wrapped in massive medieval walls, right above the Adriatic. Stay a few nights so you can see it early and late, after the cruise and day-trip crowds have gone.

Things to do
- The city wallsA 2 km walk round the top of the walls, with red roofs on one side and the sea on the other. Go early, before the heat and the crowds.Map ↗
- StradunThe polished limestone main street, with steep stepped lanes running off both sides.Map ↗
- LokrumA wooded island about 15 minutes by boat from the old harbour, with rocky swimming spots and peacocks.Map ↗
- Mount SrđA cable car up the hill behind the city, for the full view of the walls and the islands.Map ↗
Good to know
- Ferries and catamarans leave from Gruž port, west of the old town; only the Lokrum and Cavtat boats use the old harbour.
- Halal food is scarce, but Croatia has its own halal certification, and Taj Mahal, a Bosnian restaurant in the old town, carries it.
