drakensberg
Basalt cliffs, grassy mountain paths and San rock art above South Africa's eastern foothills.
- Best time
- April–May and September–October have comfortable days and fewer storms. Winter is clear but very cold at night, with snow up high; summer is green, with afternoon thunderstorms.
- How long
- 3–4 days in one valley
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Durban, usually via Dubai or Doha, about 17–21 hours all in, or via Johannesburg. The central Drakensberg is about 3 hours from Durban by road and 4–5 hours from Johannesburg.

The Drakensberg is a long wall of basalt cliffs along the Lesotho border, and each valley at its foot is a separate walking base. One area is enough for a first trip, with waterfalls, San rock art and big views without an expedition.

Good to know
- Pick one valley as your base; the trailheads are close on the map but far apart by road.
- Summer storms build by early afternoon, so start walks early and get off the high ground by lunch.
- Halal meals are rare in the mountain lodges. Bring groceries from Durban or Pietermaritzburg, or arrange meals ahead.
