dijon
Ducal courtyards, patterned roofs and a covered market full of Burgundy produce.
- Best time
- May, June, September and October are best for the old town and the Burgundy countryside. July and August can be hot; winter is cold and quiet, with the fine arts museum a good anchor.
- How long
- 2 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct to Paris on Malaysia Airlines (about 13.5 hours), then a TGV from Gare de Lyon to Dijon (about 1 hour 40 minutes). The old centre is a short walk from the station. France is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Dijon has the mustard shops, but its old centre deserves more than a souvenir stop. The dukes of Burgundy left a grand palace and glazed, patterned roofs, with timbered streets and a busy market hall in between.

Things to do
- The Owl's TrailLittle brass owl markers in the pavement lead you round the old town, past a stone owl on Notre-Dame church that locals rub for luck.Map ↗
- Palace of the DukesThe dukes' palace faces the half-moon Place de la Libération and holds the fine arts museum, with the dukes' carved tombs.Map ↗

Good to know
- Burgundy cooking puts wine in almost everything, from boeuf bourguignon to eggs in red-wine sauce. For halal meat, Turkish and North African places are the easy option.
- Les Halles is busiest on market mornings and quiet the rest of the week.
