Misty highland plateau with ancient Hindu temples and steaming craters.
- Best time
- June to September is driest. Nights are cold, and in July and August frost can whiten the fields at dawn. The Dieng Culture Festival, usually around August, draws big crowds.

- Fly KL to Yogyakarta, about 2.5 hours, then about 3.5–4 hours by road via Magelang and Wonosobo.

A volcanic plateau more than 2,000 metres up, the highest on Java. Mist drifts over potato fields, small crater lakes and bubbling mud pools, and the Arjuna temples here are among the oldest Hindu temples on the island.

Good to know
- Pack proper warm clothes. It can drop to near freezing at night.
- Some craters give off toxic gas. Stick to marked paths and respect any closures.
