derry
An intact ring of city walls, Bogside murals and footbridges over the Foyle.
- Best time
- May–September is best for walking the walls and the riverfront. Late October brings Derry's Halloween festival, one of the biggest in Europe; November–February is wet and dark early.
- How long
- 1–2 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop via London Heathrow to City of Derry Airport, about 17–19 hours all in. Or fly to Belfast and take the train or coach, about 2 hours; the train's last stretch runs along the shore of Lough Foyle. Northern Ireland runs on UK time: 7 hours behind KL in summer and 8 in winter.

Derry, also called Londonderry, is the only city in Ireland whose 17th-century walls are still complete. Inside and below them, the Bogside murals and the city's museums tell the story of the Troubles.

Good to know
- A guided walk of the walls and the Bogside gives you the stories behind the murals and memorials.
- Signs and timetables use both Derry and Londonderry for the same city.
- Halal food is limited to a few takeaways, so a self-catering flat helps.
