derawan islands

Turtles around island jetties, coral reefs and boat days towards Sangalaki and Maratua.

Best time
April to September usually brings calmer seas and clearer water. December to February is wetter and rougher, which makes the long boat runs between islands harder going.
How long

Getting there
AirAsia flies direct from KL to Balikpapan in about 3 hours; connect to Berau (about 1 hour 15 minutes), then drive about 2–2.5 hours to Tanjung Batu and take a 30-minute speedboat to Derawan. East Kalimantan is on the same time as KL.

Good to know

  • Derawan and Maratua need different boat plans, so tell the operator where you're staying before booking transfers.
  • Food is halal as standard in these Muslim fishing communities.
  • Keep a respectful distance from turtles and mantas, and never block their way to the surface.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
