deerland park

A small private animal park near Kuala Gandah, where kids hand-feed a herd of tame deer.

Best time
Any time of year, on a dry morning. March to October is drier; floods in past monsoons have damaged the park and drowned some of its animals.
How long
1–2 hours
Getting there
About 1.5–2 hours' drive from KL: the Karak Highway and East Coast Expressway to the Lanchang exit, then follow the signs for Kuala Gandah and turn off at Bukit Rengit. The last road is narrow and winding.

≈ 73 km from KL, as the crow flies

A small, privately run animal park in the forest at Bukit Rengit, about 8 km from the Kuala Gandah elephant centre. Its owner built it with his own money in 1996. The main event is feeding a herd of tame rusa deer by hand, with ostriches, nilgai, rabbits, birds and a python around the grounds. It's a bit worn and very low-key, which small kids won't mind at all.

Makan

  1. Breakfast in LanchangRoti canai or nasi lemak at the kedai makan in town before the drive in.Map ↗

Things to do

  1. Deer feedingSwap your coupon for a basket of sweet potato and the deer come straight to you. The food is rationed to keep them healthy.Map ↗
  2. The animal walkPens of ostriches, nilgai, rabbits, guinea pigs, prairie dogs and birds, plus a python the keepers let you touch.Map ↗
  3. The herb gardenA raised walkway past forest herbs like kacip fatimah and janggut adam.Map ↗
  4. Kuala GandahThe national elephant centre is 10 minutes up the road, so do both in one morning.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Do Kuala Gandah first, soon after it opens, then stop here on the way back to the highway.
  • The deer nip if you're slow with the food, so show small kids how to hold it out flat.
