dazaifu
Big shrine for exam luck, plum blossoms and warm umegae mochi off the grill.
- Best time
- February to early March for plum blossoms, and November for autumn leaves. Exam season, roughly January to March, brings crowds of students and parents.
- How long
- Half a day
- Getting there
- Fly from KL to Fukuoka, about 6 hours (often via another hub). From Tenjin in central Fukuoka, the Nishitetsu train takes about 30–40 minutes with one change, or there's a direct bus from Hakata Station.

A small town just outside Fukuoka, built around Dazaifu Tenmangu, the shrine to the god of learning. Students come to pray for exam luck; everyone else comes for the plum trees, the snack shops along the approach and the Kyushu National Museum next door.

Good to know
- Go early on weekends, before the tour buses arrive from Fukuoka.
- Bow at the torii gates and keep your voice down near the main hall. It's a working shrine.
