dataran merdeka
The independence flagpole, a broad padang and Sultan Abdul Samad's copper domes.
- Best time
- Any time of year. Early morning or late afternoon is cooler, and the buildings are lit at night. The Merdeka and New Year countdowns close the roads around the square.
- How long
- Half a day
- Getting there
- Take the LRT to Masjid Jamek and walk five minutes, or the LRT or MRT to Pasar Seni and walk about 10. Don't drive; there's little parking, and the roads close for events.

Dataran Merdeka is where the Union Jack came down at midnight on 31 August 1957, on the old padang of the Selangor Club. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building faces it across Jalan Raja, and since its restoration you can walk inside.
