Sunset markets, harbour walks and a tropical city with plenty of Asian food.
- Best time
- May–September is the dry season, with clear skies and the outdoor markets in full swing. October–November is the hot, sticky build-up; December–March brings monsoon rain and the odd cyclone.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop, usually via Singapore, about 8–10 hours all in. The airport is about 15 minutes from the city. Darwin is 1.5 hours ahead of KL all year.

Darwin feels closer to Southeast Asia than to Sydney: laksa for breakfast, tropical fruit at the markets and warm evenings outdoors. It's also the gateway to Kakadu and Litchfield, so give the city a couple of days either side.

Good to know
- Never swim in the harbour, rivers or creeks: saltwater crocodiles live there, and box jellyfish arrive in the wet.
- Halal is easier here than in most of northern Australia, with halal Indonesian cafés around Smith Street Mall in the centre. At market laksa stalls, check with the cook.
