No direct flights from KL. Fly with one stop, usually via Kolkata, to Bagdogra (about 7–9 hours all in), then it's about 3 hours uphill by road. India is 2.5 hours behind KL.

Darjeeling spreads along a steep ridge above tea gardens, with Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, filling the horizon when the sky clears. The town is busy, but early walks, tea tastings and the little toy train give the days a slower pace.

Good to know

  • The toy train's full run up from New Jalpaiguri takes most of a day, so most visitors just do the two-hour joyride from Darjeeling.
  • Cloud usually rolls in by late morning, so mountain views are an early thing.
  • Halal is hard to find in Darjeeling; vegetable momos, thukpa and Indian vegetarian thalis are the easy options.
