One of South Korea's biggest cities, set in a basin in the south-east, and much less touristy than Seoul or Busan. It has huge traditional markets, a food scene built on grilled offal and fiery braised ribs, and mountain temples up on Palgongsan.

Good to know

  • In July and August, plan indoor or evening activities. The midday heat is serious.
  • The climb to Gatbawi is a long, steady walk up stone steps. Bring water and go early.
