A Mekong riverside town of old wooden shophouses, with the hills of Laos on the far bank. It's sleepy by day; in the evening the main street fills with snack stalls and Thai weekenders, and at dawn mist lies low over the river.

Good to know
- Weekends and Thai holidays are packed; come midweek for a quieter stay.
- Phu Thok's last stretch is by local shuttle truck, so get there early on winter weekends.
- Halal food is very limited. Grilled river fish, sticky rice and egg dishes are the easy fallback.
