Hunan's capital is a late-night city where chilli, stinky tofu and crowded pavements are part of the fun. Across the river, Yuelu Mountain's trees and old academy give you room to slow down. It's also the gateway to Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang.

Good to know
- Book the Hunan Museum online ahead with your passport details; entry tickets run out.
- Hunan food is spicy and uses a lot of pork. Lanzhou-style halal noodle shops (look for the qingzhen, 清真, signs) are the easy halal option.
