carcassonne
Double castle walls above the river, with a lived-in market town below.
- Best time
- April to June and September to October are best for walking the walls. July and August are hot and the Cité is packed, especially around the 14 July fireworks; winter is quiet and often windy.
- How long
- 1–2 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct to Paris on Malaysia Airlines (about 13.5 hours), then a TGV from Montparnasse to Toulouse (about 4.5 hours) and a regional train to Carcassonne (under an hour). France is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Carcassonne's hilltop Cité, with two rings of walls and dozens of pointed towers, looks drawn for a storybook; much of it was restored in the 1800s. Across the river, the lower town is where people actually live and shop.

Things to do
- The CitéTwo rings of walls around narrow lanes, free to walk into and best early or late in the day.Map ↗
- Château ComtalThe castle inside the Cité, and the way onto the best stretches of the ramparts.Map ↗
- Pont VieuxThe old stone bridge over the Aude, with the classic view of the walls above.Map ↗
- Bastide Saint-LouisThe lower town's grid of streets around Place Carnot, with its market and cafés.Map ↗
Good to know
- The station is in the lower town, about half an hour's walk from the Cité and uphill at the end; a bus or taxi helps with bags.
- Kebab and North African places are in the lower town rather than the Cité. Cassoulet has pork, so duck confit is the safer order.
