Best time
June and September are warm enough to swim without the peak crowds. The film festival fills the town in May, July and August are hot and packed, and winter is mild: fine for walks, too cool for the beach.

Getting there
Fly to Nice with one stop, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 17–19 hours all in. Cannes is about 45 minutes from Nice airport by bus or taxi, or half an hour by train from central Nice. France is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Cannes is more than the festival steps and the big seafront hotels. Le Suquet, the old quarter, climbs above the harbour, and the Lérins islands are a short ferry ride away for pine woods and clear water.

Things to do

  1. La CroisetteThe palm-lined seafront, past sandy beaches and the Palais des Festivals with its red-carpet steps.Map ↗
  2. Le SuquetSteep lanes up to an old church and a castle museum, with the best view over the bay.Map ↗
  3. Île Sainte-MargueriteThe bigger island: pine paths, rocky swimming coves and the fort that held the Man in the Iron Mask.Map ↗
  4. Île Saint-HonoratThe smaller island belongs to a working monastery. The monks still make wine, and the paths are quiet.Map ↗

Good to know

  • The beaches in front of the big hotels are private. Plage Macé by the Palais and Plage du Midi west of the old port are free.
  • Each island has its own ferry from the old port, so buy for the one you want.
  • Halal choice is wider in Nice. In Cannes, Turkish and North African takeaways are the usual halal option, and socca is vegetarian.
