cancun

Caribbean beaches, Isla Mujeres boat trips and Maya sites within day-trip reach.

Best time
December–April are sunny and drier, with Christmas and spring break busiest. Summer is hot and humid; September–October are the wettest months and the peak of hurricane season, and sargassum seaweed washes up in varying amounts, mostly in summer.
How long
4–5 days
Getting there
Fly with one stop, usually via Istanbul, Amsterdam or Paris, about 26–30 hours all in. The airport is 20–30 minutes from the hotel zone. Cancún is 13 hours behind KL all year. Malaysians don't need a visa for Mexico, but connecting through a US airport would need a US visa.

Cancún is a beach base on the Caribbean, with a long hotel zone on a sandbar and an ordinary Mexican town inland. Isla Mujeres, Maya ruins and swimming holes called cenotes are all within a day trip.

Good to know

  • Halal is very limited, so seafood does most of the work; cochinita pibil, the famous Yucatán dish, is pork.
  • ADO airport buses run to downtown and to Punta Cancún in the hotel zone; from either, it's a taxi or local bus to your hotel.
