Punts on the River Cam, college lawns and the high stone ceiling of King's College Chapel.

Best time
April–September is best for the Backs and the river, with summer weekends the busiest. November–February is cold and dark early, and the museums are a better bet than a long spell on the water.
How long
1–2 days
Getting there
Fly direct from KL to London (about 14 hours) on Malaysia Airlines or British Airways, then take the train from King's Cross to Cambridge, about 50 minutes on the fast service. The UK is 7 hours behind KL in summer and 8 in winter.

Cambridge is bikes, college gates and lawns running down to the River Cam. The centre is small and flat, so a chapel, a museum and a punt fit easily into one day.

Good to know

  • Halal is easy on Mill Road, home to Cambridge Central Mosque and a string of Bangladeshi, Turkish and Middle Eastern places and grocers.
  • The station is about 25 minutes' walk from the colleges; a bus or a hired bike saves your legs.
  • The Backs punt passes the famous colleges; the longer trip to Grantchester is about meadows, not buildings.
