Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree rainforest. The town itself is small and laid-back; the reason to come is the days out on the water and in the hills.

Things to do
- Great Barrier ReefDay boats head to the outer reef for snorkelling and diving; the big pontoon trips suit non-swimmers and kids.Map ↗
- KurandaA rainforest village in the hills, reached by a historic railway one way and the Skyrail cableway over the canopy the other.Map ↗
- Cairns EsplanadeA free saltwater lagoon pool on the waterfront, since the sea in front is mudflats and crocodile country.Map ↗
- Daintree RainforestOne of the oldest rainforests on earth, meeting the reef at Cape Tribulation. A long day trip north.Map ↗
Good to know
- Halal food is limited to a few Indian and Middle Eastern places in town. Reef boats can usually do a vegetarian or seafood lunch if you ask when booking.
- November to May is stinger season. Swim in the lagoon, or in the full-body suits the reef boats hand out, and take crocodile signs seriously.
