cagliari

A hilltop old quarter, flamingo lagoons and a city beach long enough for a proper walk.

Best time
May–June and September–October are warm enough for the beach without the summer crowds. July–August is hot and busy; winter is mild but wetter.
How long
3 days
Getting there
Fly with one stop to Rome, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 16–18 hours all in, then take the hour's flight to Cagliari. Trains from the airport station reach the centre in about 10 minutes. Italy is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Sardinia's capital climbs from its port to the walled Castello quarter on the hilltop. Down below, the long beach at Poetto and lagoons full of flamingos are a short bus ride away.

Things to do

  2. PoettoA long sandy city beach east of the centre, with kiosks and a seafront path.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Public lifts from the lower town save the steepest climbs up to Castello.
  • Halal meat is rare, but seafood, fregula and culurgiones make easy meals.
