Byron Bay is a laid-back surf town where the day runs from an early surf to a long breakfast to sunset at the lighthouse. The centre gets busy, but walk a little and the beaches open up.

Things to do
- Walgun Cape Byron walking trackA loop over the headland to the lighthouse and the most easterly point of mainland Australia, often with dolphins in the surf below.Map ↗
- The PassLong, gentle waves peeling along the headland, with surfers to watch or join.Map ↗
- Wategos BeachA small, sheltered beach tucked under the cape, good for a swim and a picnic.Map ↗
- Belongil BeachA longer, quieter stretch of sand west of the town centre.Map ↗
Good to know
- Walk the cape early, before the heat and the fight for parking.
- Halal meat is rare in Byron, but the food leans vegetarian and vegan, so there's always plenty to eat.
