busan in 4 days, 3 nights

Haeundae on arrival, the seaside temple and Gwangalli's bridge lights, a day on the old port side for Gamcheon and Jagalchi, and a last bowl of milmyeon before flying home.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive and Haeundae

    Morning
Fly direct from KL to Gimhae, about 6.5 hours when direct flights are running, or fly into Seoul and take the KTX south, about 2.5 hours. Korea is an hour ahead of Malaysia.
    Afternoon
Check in near Haeundae Beach and take the seaside walk out to Dongbaekseom island.
    Evening
Eomuk, Busan's fish cakes on skewers in hot broth, from a street stall, then dinner near the beach.
  2. Day 2

    Temple by the sea

    Morning
Go early to Haedong Yonggungsa, the Buddhist temple on the rocks by the sea, about 20 minutes from Haeundae by taxi.
    Lunch
Dwaeji gukbap, pork and rice soup, Busan's comfort food. If you don't eat pork, have seafood instead.
    Afternoon
Back to Haeundae for a slow afternoon on the beach or in a café.
    Evening
Ride a few stops along Line 2 to Gwangalli Beach and watch Gwangan Bridge light up from the sand.
  3. Day 3

    Gamcheon and Jagalchi

    Morning
Cross the city by subway, about an hour, then take a short bus up the hill to Gamcheon Culture Village, a hillside of pastel houses, murals and little galleries above the port.
    Lunch
Down to Jagalchi Market, Korea's biggest fish market. Pick your seafood downstairs and have it cooked upstairs.
    Afternoon
Walk a few minutes to Nampo-dong and BIFF Square for ssiat hotteok, sweet pancakes stuffed with seeds and nuts.
    Evening
    Back to Haeundae for dinner.
  4. Day 4

    Milmyeon and home

    Morning
A slow morning by the beach.
    Lunch
Milmyeon, chewy wheat noodles in a cold, tangy broth, a Busan invention.
    Afternoon
Head to Gimhae Airport, about an hour from Haeundae, and fly home. If you came via Seoul, allow time for the KTX back up.

Good to know

  • Malaysians have needed a K-ETA, Korea's online travel authorisation, in recent years. Check the current rules and apply on the official site well before you fly.
  • Direct flights to Busan don't always run, so check before you book.
  • Gamcheon is a residential area. Keep noise down and don't photograph people's homes up close.
