A harbour full of old ships, street art and a suspension bridge over the Avon Gorge.

Best time
April–October is good for the harbour and Clifton, especially May–June and September. August brings the Balloon Fiesta, when over a hundred hot-air balloons rise over the city; November–February is damp and dark early.
How long

Getting there
Fly direct from KL to London (about 14 hours) on Malaysia Airlines or British Airways, then take the train from Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads, about 1 hour 40 minutes. Coaches also run straight from Heathrow in about 2 hours. The UK is 7 hours behind KL in summer and 8 in winter.

Bristol's old docks are now a harbour of museums, boats and waterside cafés, and its walls carry some of Britain's best street art, Banksy's included. Up the hill, Clifton has Georgian terraces and a suspension bridge over a deep gorge.

  4. Banksy and Stokes CroftBristol is Banksy's home town. A few of his pieces survive, and Stokes Croft is covered in murals.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Halal is easy: Stapleton Road in Easton is the hub, and plenty of places around the centre serve halal meat too.
  • The harbour is flat, but Clifton is a steep climb; take a bus up and walk back down.
