black forest

Wooded hills, lake walks, waterfall paths and villages full of cuckoo clocks.

Best time
May–June and September–October are best for walking, with autumn colour in October. July–August is busy around Titisee; winter brings snow to the higher hills and short days.
How long
3–4 days
Getting there
Lufthansa flies direct from KL to Frankfurt from late October 2026, about 13 hours; otherwise it's one stop via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul. Trains from Frankfurt airport reach Freiburg in about 2 hours, and regional trains carry on into the forest. Germany is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

The Black Forest is a big region of dark pine hills, lakes and farmhouse villages in Germany's southwest corner, home of the cuckoo clock and the cherry cake. Pick a base and do day trips: lakes, waterfalls and the old university city of Freiburg.

Good to know

  • Many hotels give guests a KONUS card for free buses and regional trains across the Black Forest.
  • Base yourself near a railway station if you're not driving; buses to the hill villages can be infrequent.
  • Freiburg has Turkish kebab shops and restaurants; out in the villages halal meat is rare, and the famous cake contains alcohol.
